Crown

Happy things from today:

  • It was an SCA event day.  Keziah went to an Arts and Sciences event in Connecticut.  Gideon and I went to Massachusetts.  The three of us left very early and got to see a beautiful orange sky as the sun rose.  We drove together to Nashua, NH.  Then Keziah went with a friend to Connecticut, and Gideon and I picked up a friend to go to Massachusetts.

  • Gideon, our friend, and I went to breakfast next.  I decided to be good and ordered an omelet instead of French toast.  A good breakfast was the right way to start off our day.
  • The event we went to was Crown Tourney.  Last month the new King and Queen stepped up.  This month their successors were chosen by winning the day's fights. In this case a man fought for a man so we have two Princes.  It was a good day with good friends.
  • I met someone today who is a metal craftsmen.  He gave a buckle he made to me and one to my friend.  He also showed us a spur that was made in the 1350's or thereabouts (I think).  He had this spur in a box with the things he made.  It seemed like it should be in a museum, but we all got to hold and look at it.  Pretty cool.  I should have taken a picture of it.  Here is the buckle he made:
  • Gideon came to the event with me so he could be there when some of his friends got Tiger's Cub awards.  It was a long day for all of us, but he was especially ready to leave when the event was over.
  • After dinner we dropped off our friend in Nashua and picked Keziah up.  On the drive home we all got to share stories from our event experiences.

Sparkle

Happy Saturday things:

  • Today we celebrated the 36th anniversary of the Barony of Stonemarche. On October 3, 1987 the SCA groups in New Hampshire became a Barony. I was the only person at today’s event that also participated at the event in 1987. This became a bit of a joke today.
  • We held two champions competitions today, one for Thrown Weapons, and one for Arts & Sciences. It was a good day to be outside watching the people throw weapons. When it started to get a little chilly, it was time to go inside and judge the A&S competition. Congratulations to the new Champions.
  • The event was held in Lincoln, NH close to mountains. The drive to get there and the location were beautiful. All of today’s pictures are below.
  • Sparkle is the Inktober prompt today.

Castle

 Today was a happy day.

  • My protégé and I traveled together to the SCA event, Coronation.  Approximately every six months we get a new set Royals that step up and the old set retire.  That makes the Royals who stepped up today the 110th set.  The pair that just stepped down have been Royals four times.  This is the first time for the current pair that stepped up today.  It was really nice to spend time with my protégé. Keziah and family went to the event as well in their car.
  • We all arrived a little late and missed some of the first court of the day.  I got to play with a baby during some of that court.  I also got to see some friends get awards (during both courts) which is always nice.

  • My protégé took care of us after the morning court by bringing sandwich makings for our group.  I'm very grateful for that.
  • During the second court of the day something wonderful happened.  Keziah was called into court and given a writ for becoming a Laurel.  What does all that mean?  A Laurel is the highest level award given for excellence in Arts & Sciences.  A writ is basically saying that if the person receiving it wants (feels they deserve) the award, show up at a particular event, prepared, and you get it.  The process is actually a bit more complicated than that, but that is the quick version (including bad grammar).  I am a very proud mother.

  • After the event, a group of us went out for dinner before the long drive home.
  • The Inktober prompt for today was castle.

A few more pictures from the day...

Last Day

Some happy things from today:

  • For years I have been on an email list to receive an email with a word of the day.  There have been months that the emails are ignored, but lately I've been reading the word of the day and skimming through the weekly compendium that arrives to my inbox on Sundays.  This week one of the words was 'anachronism'.  I found myself more than skimming the compendium today and was not disappointed. Someone from Illinois mentioned the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) as an example for that word's usage.
  • Keziah and family arrived at the event in the morning.  It was really good to see them.  We ended up starting the fencing and fighting later than planned because a few more people arrived at the event and got me distracted.  There were only two fencers, so that competition was short.  There were four heavy list fighters and that competition took a little longer.  They were all a pleasure to watch.
  • After the competitions we signed scrolls and held our court.  This is where we announce the winners of the competitions and award others for their deeds well done.  We had some minor problems with a scroll and stumbled a little, but I think it went well.
  • Then it was pack down time.  Something happened with one of the attendees and I ended up following my friend who was driving someone else's car to Springfield,  MA so I could bring my friend back to her house in New Hampshire. I had a passenger on the way to Springfield that I hadn't met before.  It all went much better than my imagination led me to believe and I am glad for the experience.
  • I let my phone get handed around for picture taking purposes (I forgot to take some early on) and I am grateful to those people for taking pictures.
