Basil

Some happy things from today:

  • It is Wednesday so that means I have worked two-thirds of my week. One day left and it will be my weekend.
  • Last year I went gluten-free for a few months. I am trying to reduce my gluten now rather than completely cutting it out. Part of my reason for this is that I like the convenience of fast food on the weekends and when I go to SCA events. Fast food often means gluten for me. One exception is the baked potato at Wendy’s. To save myself some money I bought some potatoes for my after work meal. I cooked it in the microwave to save time and it didn't come out horrible. There was a dry spot that I think I could fix by flipping the potato half way through. I put some butter and cheese on it and it was good.
  • Last week when it was really hot my plants could have used more water. I lost some of the peppermint. The basil seems to be doing okay though. It is almost time to start using some of the basil!

Lily of the Valley

Some happy Tuesday things:

  • Gideon's second day back at public school seems to have gone well.  He started just in time to be able to take the state standardized tests and he seems okay with that.
  • The plants I started as seeds that grew seem to be doing okay. I need to make the time to put some more of them into bigger pots.

  • The Lily of the valley plants are up and starting to bud. I was worried when I didn't see them last time I checked. I thinned some of them a while back and I was concerned that maybe I thinned them too much. I think they'll be alright.

Beltane

Happy May Day!  Here are some happy things from today:

  • The rain stopped for a little while so Keziah and I went outside and did a small bit of yard work. There is a small, steep hill that I don't like to mow. We raked it, pulled up some of the soil, and planted some mixed wildflowers there.

  • Basil roots are growing through the netting of the seed starters they are in. I have paced two of them in larger pots with more soil to help them grow.  I'll try to do the others next week.

  • There are more tulips blooming. I'm looking forward to more blooms over the next week or so.

  • The rhododendron in the side yard is blooming. The one in the backyard is not.

Good Work Day (Night)

Some happy things from this Wednesday:

  • Sometime in the last two weeks or so I started hearing the distant song of frogs at night when I leave for work. As I paused for a moment to listen to them before getting into the car, I noticed the moon. The moon was a slim crescent shape near the horizon. From my vantage point it was nestled between tree tops.
  • At work tonight I was in the Problem Solve department, but not by myself. At one point the training person came by and told me that if I wanted, I could trade in my green Safety vest for a maroon Problem Solve vest. I told them I would need to think about it. I wouldn't be giving up being on the safety committee. I talked to another employee and I've decided that I still have more to learn before I want to wear the maroon vest. I've learned a bunch in the Problem Solve corner, but there are other aspects that I still need to learn. My supervisor also spoke with me today and he is pleased with my progress.
  • About 45 minutes before the end of shift all the employees got to go outside for a cookout and to hit a wiffle ball if they wanted. It was fun to watch and a nice break from work.
  • When I got home I checked on my plants. The basil is getting bigger and looks more like basil now.

New Life

The problems that had to be solved last night at work were greater than the night before. I got a little frustrated because of the quantity and time limitations. The odd thing is that I still feel like I enjoyed it. My other happy things from today are plant based:

  • Plant life is starting to thrive. There are some dandelions in the yard. They are good for pollinators.
  • A regular yellow tulip has bloomed and it looks like a red one near it will be next.

  • The basil that I planted from seed seems to be doing alright. It looks like some of the peppermint seeds I planted are sprouting, too!

National Dress Day

Had I known, before writing this blog, that today was National Dress Day, I may have worn a skirt.  None of my dresses (except the medieval ones) would be appropriate for the cold weather.

Some happy things from today:

  • When I am at home, most of my mornings are spent walking around the house to get my steps in. Somehow, I miss liking walking in the snow. Maybe next year I will appreciate the snow again. I’m very thankful that my family seems to humor me as I wander around in circles and get in their way.
  • The seedlings need more light. I set up one of the grow lights I have to shine onto the greenhouse. It isn’t ideal, but it should provide them more light than they had before.
  • There are a few more seeds that have sprouted. So far the only ones that are sprouting seem to be the basil.
